History

The Detroit Chapter of the American Payroll Association was organized in 1985. The Chapter has been hosting several meetings per year since that time. We organized the first Michigan Statewide meeting in 1989. We have twice received "honorable mention" in the APA's Chapter of the Year recognition. In 1997 Detroit became the second APA Chapter to have a home page on the Internet.  The website was completely redesigned in 2007.

Chapter Facts

Purpose: The Chapter is a non-profit professional organization dedicated to providing educational, communication, and networking opportunities for payroll professionals.

Membership: Chapter membership is open to all payroll professionals or interested third parties such as payroll vendors. Although membership in the APA national organization is encouraged, it is not required. Membership dues are $30 per year.  Member benefits include discounts on Chapter-sponsored activities.

Meetings: The Chapter hosts several meetings per year. Meetings are held at various locations in the Metro Detroit area. In addition, the Chapter works with other active Michigan Chapters (see below) to host an annual two-day Statewide Conference. For information about upcoming meetings, please go to the “Meeting Schedule” page.  Requests for meeting directions or other meeting questions may be sent to secretary@apadetroit.org.

Local "Hotline" Service: As a supplement to the APA’s national "hotline" referral service, the Chapter maintains a local "hotline" to help answer members’ payroll questions. This service is currently coordinated by Mary Jo Harling at EDS.  Members may submit questions to hotline@apadetroit.org .

Member Communications: Members and other interested parties receive periodic mailings which include meeting minutes and information about upcoming events. To be added to the mailing list, or to change your address, please email mailinglist@apadetroit.org.

Certification: The Chapter supports members’ efforts to attain and maintain professional certification through the APA’s Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) and Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) programs. In conjunction with Schoolcraft College, the Chapter conducts an annual CPP preparation class. In addition, most Chapter meetings are certified for Recertification Credit Hour (RCH)  credits. These credits accumulate towards renewal of FPC or CPP certification.

Other Michigan Chapters: The West Michigan Chapter is currently the other active Michigan Chapter.  Information on the West Michigan Chapter is available on their website, http://www.westmichiganapa.org

If you have any questions about the Detroit Chapter please send an email to info@apadetroit.org
